Group Therapy Q & A

What is Group Therapy?

Group therapy focuses on providing insight into the dynamics of drug addiction relapse or the recurrence of mental health issues to support your recovery. This type of therapeutic treatment is essential for helping you identify the warning signs of a potential relapse and compliments other modalities of care for addiction recovery and mental health. The team at Behavioral Health Clinic offers an intensive outpatient program (IOP), which involves integrated and individualized care for addiction recovery or in the treatment of mental health issues. This program is an effective follow-up upon the completion of in-patient care and includes both individualized and group therapy sessions.

What’s involved in group therapy?

Outpatient group therapy sessions offer a less intensive structure if you already have an established recovery program and need additional support. During your session, the team focuses on providing a stable structure for you to improve your self-help support system and focus on the concerns you have about your risk for relapse. You can expect to gain insight into your emotional and mental health through psychotherapy (talk therapy) and behavioral therapy and learn techniques to better cope with stress and other addiction triggers. The group setting allows you to discuss your experiences and share ideas with others going through addiction or mental health struggles. Your specialized therapy team, which includes psychiatrists, nurses, and specialized therapists, creates a therapy plan centered around your individual needs and focuses on your long-term success. You may begin your group therapy sessions in conjunction with other treatments to enhance your results. If you’re unable to meet with your provider in-office, the Behavioral Health Clinic offers the convenience of teletherapy. You can use the telehealth platform to meet with your therapist or group anywhere you are.

How long do I need to participate in group therapy?

The Behavioral Health Clinic providers can determine how often and how long you need to participate in group therapy based on your initial assessment during the intake process. This assessment considers the severity of your mental health condition or your addiction to drugs or alcohol. The counseling team works closely with you to monitor your progress and determine how long you may benefit from therapy.

I’m doing wonderful. I’ve been here since [a few years ago], and it’s been a journey. I’m doing well with my sobriety and my mental health. I’ve accomplished pretty much everything I wanted to accomplish…I’m [religious] and I pray, and when I wake up, I make my prayers a reality…We were on quarantine, and we’re on [COVID-19] restrictions. They want to keep us as far away as possible [from the danger of contracting COVID-19]. Now we have a second wave [of COVID-19] …We got a good program going on here…The things I might mention are very minor. The program is moving smoothly, like a train. Overall, the program is a 10, for me and my recovery. Without BHC, I don’t know where I’d be right now.

I love it. It’s probably the best program in Maryland, in my opinion…It’s peaceful here…I have no suggestions (to improve the program). I would say this is one of the best programs I’ve experienced. I didn’t know who I was as an individual, and this program helped me find myself; it broke down who I am as an individual. This program would help build anyone’s character and help them stop doing drugs. BHC is a 5.

It's going good for me. I came here [several months ago] for addiction [treatment]. I really like the program. I had never been in an addiction program before. The program is wonderful, and I just love it…They help you with housing, and they help you with Social Security and food stamps. They’re real great about helping you with whatever you need. I give the program a 10. On a scale of 1 to 5, I give it a 5.

It’s going great. The staff, the programs, the facilitators—it’s all great…My only suggestion is they keep up the good work. It meets all of my needs. Overall, it’s a 5.

It’s going wonderful. I’ve been here several months…It’s wonderful. Compared to other programs, this place is really good. They push you and bring out the good in you…We’re staying safe; we have to because this (COVID-19) is dangerous. This is my third time here, but the difference now is that I’m participating, and I’m sober. I participate more vocally. I’m still quiet, but now, if I need to say something, I’m saying it…The program is a 5. But you have to ask, because they (staff) can’t read your mind. If you ask, they’ll accommodate you. I would recommend this place to anybody. You get out of it what you put in, and everybody can’t hold your hand. My addiction was alcohol. Once I saw people dying off because of alcohol as much as people dying because of Fentanyl, I knew I had to change.
